Jane Austen - Be Persuaded - Costume Exhibition - Portland Library
Thursday, August 17, 2017
to Thursday, September 14, 2017

10:00 AM - 5:30 PM
Jane Austen - Be Persuaded
To mark the 200th Anniversary of her death, Dressing Australia Museum of Costume has designed a rare and wonderful Exhibition bringing Jane Austen to life in original fashion of the era.

Dressing Australia Museum of Costume is an important and extensive collection of period and vintage fashion, textiles and fashion ephemera. Dressing Australia is not a destination museum but uses its collection to create and stage themed costume exhibitions around Australia and in New Zealand.

Be Persuaded follows Jane's life - and the unforgettable characters she created - from growing up in the 18th century into the era most associated with her - the Regency era at the beginning of the 19th century. Be Persuaded features rare fashion accessories and ephemera from the 18th century when Jane was born, through to the 1840s when Jane's beloved sister Cassandra died.

Pieces such as these are rarely on display outside of major museums - an 18th century silk gown, diaphanous Empire line frocks, spencers, capes and shawls, boots, pumps and stockings, bonnets and parasols. Gowns of the 1820s and 1840s. A wonderful collection of astutely observed hand painted watercolours tracking fashions from the 1790s to 1830. A rare collection of original bills and promissory notes revealing an 18th century lady's dealings with the tradespeople who catered to her cosmetic, fashion and finance needs. An indenture revealing the life of an 18th century silk weaver's apprentice.

Jane Austen is famous yet imperfectly known. Be Persuaded brings her a little closer.
