Whilst it is state government regulation that your dog and /or cat is registered with Council, the most important reason is to ensure that your loved pet is returned to you as soon as possible should it become lost. If Council Officers are not able to identify and contact the owner of a dog or cat they have found, they are unable to return it home safely.
Have you lost your pet?
Finding lost or missing pets can be difficult. Often the animal will be frightened, disoriented, unsure of where they are or how they got there.
Having your pet registered, microchipped, and having identification tags on your pet's collar, gives you the highest probability that your lost pet will be returned to you.
To report your animal as lost, contact Council as soon as possible on 5522 2200. Then if the Local Laws Officers happen to find your pet it can be returned to you quickly and easily.
Council would recommend that you also contact the Portland RSPCA.
