Hooked on Tuna Fishing Competition - CANCELLED

Unfortunately the 2020 Hooked on Tuna fishing competition has been CANCELLED.

Protecting the health and safety of our community is Council’s top priority. We are closely monitoring the situation and adhering to the current health advice issued by Australia’s Chief Medical Officer to ensure that we are best prepared to help reduce the incidence of a potential outbreak.

We realise that people may be concerned about coronavirus and first and foremost we urge people to follow the current health advice about handwashing thoroughly and regularly, undertaking social distancing and staying at home if experiencing a fever or new persistent cough.

Any upcoming Council operated events and public meetings will be cancelled. This includes the Twilight Cinema events in Casterton and Nelson, the Hooked on Tuna fishing competition, All Abilities Playspace opening and all Glenelg Shire 2040 Community Reference Group meetings have been cancelled.

Numerous fish are being caught throughout the year of 100kg+ making Portland the Southern Bluefin Tuna capital.

Portland’s Southern Bluefin tuna industry is worth about $10 million to the Glenelg Shire economy.

Portland is home to a world class recreational fishing industry, attracting thousands of anglers from across Australia. The season is traditionally from February to June each year, but in recent years anglers have recorded big catches year round.
