MEDIA RELEASE - Glenelg leads Great Ocean Road boom trade

The Great Ocean Road is Victoria’s highest performing region for tourism with Glenelg Shire assisting to lead the booming trade.

New data from Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism showed the Great Ocean Road region, which stretches from Nelson to Torquay, generated $871 million for the state’s economy to June 2017 – growth of almost 18 per cent on the year before. This figure is 6.4 per cent higher than the rest of regional Victoria.

The region generated more than 11,000 tourism jobs, growing by 16 per cent from the 2015-16 financial year. Total tourism employment accounted for almost 18 per cent of the regional economy’s employment.

Tourism spend totalled $1.7 billion for the year, an increase of 17 per cent. This was supported by almost 66,000 international visitor nights in Glenelg Shire for the 2015-16 period and a total of 466,000 domestic visitor nights.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank, who is a Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism board member, said the region’s visitor economy was growing far quicker than expected.

“The latest forecasts for the Great Ocean Road shows visitation increases of up to 50 per cent by 2025 – a staggering figure,” Cr Rank said.

“This growth is already starting to happen locally in the last quarter with a total of 18,116 tourists to the shire’s visitor information centres alone, growth of 22 per cent on last year.

“Our centres are well on track to attract more than 100,000 visitors for the calendar year, buoyed by our local accommodation providers, cafes, hotels and retail sector all reporting growing trade.

“Our tourism and hospitality sector is now worth more than $45 million annually making it one of our shire’s biggest economic drivers after agriculture and manufacturing.

“The booming winter whale season assisted in building this recent growth, with the new WhaleMail website and social media pages assisting to build the profile of the region and therefore attracting more visitors.

“The opening of our new Casterton Kelpie Centre and associated marketing, including our ‘selfie with a Kelpie’ campaign assisted in building visitation in the town by more than 126 per cent last quarter. With the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape on the eve of UNESCO World Heritage listing, a long list of community events, and further profile building for our southern Bluefin tuna fishery, the industry is on track to break more records this summer.”

Cr Rank said council’s new Australian Kelpie Centre television commercial was due to be released later this month, with plans being formulated for a new Portland campaign.

“Local artist Josh Rawiri has kindly been in the studio recording a new track which will form the foundations for this new digital campaign. He has been supported by some highly acclaimed performers in the studio so we are extremely excited to see what is produced. Council is proud of its record of digital campaigns and is excited to showcase Portland and surrounds to a new global market,” she said.
