MEDIA RELEASE - Portland Library in the running for national design award

7 December 2018

The recent redevelopment of the Portland Library has been recognised for its success at a national level, with the new look facility earning a nomination for a national design award.

The Portland Library has been nominated for the 2019 Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) Library Design Awards. These awards, presented every two years, highlight the achievements of some of Australia’s leading architects, designers and library leaders.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the nomination was a testament to loyal library members.

“Thanks to the support of the State Government through the Living Libraries Infrastructure Program, the Portland Library was expanded and refurbished to meet growing community needs, reopening to the public in August this year. The revamped facility now offers a more accessible layout with a dedicated children’s library, youth area, research and history room and community meetings rooms,” she said.

“The nomination for the 2019 ALIA Library Design Awards is a credit to our passionate library users - we designed a facility with their help that would best suit the diverse interests of members. The Glenelg Libraries boasts one of the highest membership rates in Victoria with 74% of the population members of the library, so we needed a facility that would adapt to future needs and functions of our strong user base.

“We are incredibly proud of the end result, not only do we have a more contemporary and user friendly design, we are also welcoming more visitors through the doors than ever before.

“Between August – October 2018, we have had a staggering 25,600 of people visit the new look facility, a 34 per cent increase on visitation numbers compared to the same period last year. Furthermore, we have experienced a 14.5 per cent increase in loans and a 54 per cent increase in library membership.

“It is just fantastic to see this significant amount of people using our library and enjoying lifelong learning opportunities.”

Sponsored by Architecture AU, Raeco, the State Library of Queensland, the 2019 Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) Library Design Awards celebrate design excellence in new and refurbished libraries across Australia.

An official shortlist will be announced early in the New Year and the winning libraries in three categories will be announced at the 2019 Library Design Awards Conference as part of the Asia-Pacific Architecture Forum.

The conference will be held at the State Library of Queensland, Brisbane, on 14 March 2019, bookings for the conference close 7 March 2019.
