MEDIA RELEASE - Building growth continues in Glenelg

8 February 2019

More than $13 million worth of building permits were issued last year in Glenelg Shire with significant investment in both the public and private sector.

A total of 284 permits were issued shire wide during the 2018 calendar year, issued by both council and private contractors.
Council’s building unit issues building permits, occupancy permits, final inspection certificates and completes mandatory building and safety inspections.

New applications climbed by 18 to 150 compared to 2017 figures, a 13 per cent increase with significant investment in the health and tourism sectors.

Council’s building unit issued 144 building permits for the calendar year, growth of 12.5 per cent. The demand for new homes also increased with 37 new home permits issued last financial year, growth of eight per cent.

Conversely national building approvals dropped by 4.1 per cent in December 2018 according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, which are now at their lowest level since June 2013.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the figures were a strong illustration of the shire’s growing economy.

“This latest growth in building figures highlight the confidence in our community to invest in property and business, value adding for our own personal benefit and forecast business growth,” Cr Rank said.

“Our building surveyor has reported considerable investment during this period in health and education developments and the booming tourism sector, with much of the activity led by government departments. However, a substantial number of the permits were also for house extensions and new sheds with people value-adding to their personal assets.

“There is no doubt that continued low interest rates are fuelling this growth, further assisting people to make these important investments in their personal lives and business operations.

“Our team are reporting that the trend has continued into this new year with 18 new applications already in the system – a great sign for the months ahead.”
