MEDIA RELEASE - Two key local roads set for upgrades as part of road funding

13 May 2019

The Glenelg Shire Council has been successful in gaining funding for two major local road projects as part of Round Two of the State Government’s Fixing Country Roads Program, announced last week.

Council has received a $1.99 million share of the $70 million second round funding pool for upgrades to Heath Road in Cashmore and Bridgewater Lakes Road in Cape Bridgewater.

Glenelg Shire Acting Mayor Cr Robert Halliday said the funding would deliver much needed improvements for both local motorists and local cyclists.

“This is fantastic news for the Glenelg Shire with two key projects successfully receiving funding in the second round of this valuable program,” he said.

“For Heath Road, the funding will be used to deliver Stage Two of the Heath Road Rehabilitation Program. This will include the completion of road repairs, shoulder widening and drainage improvements on sections of the important country road link from Portland to the Portland Airport.

“Heath Road is also a popular route for local cyclists so this funding will ensure that this local road is better equipped for all types of road users.

“For Bridgewater Road these works will focus on creating a safer journey for drivers as part of the Rehabilitation Program, with works to priority sections of the narrow, winding and steep road.

“We thank the State Government for their investment into local roads and regional Victoria, and we look forward to seeing work commencing on these much awaited projects.”

The Heath Road Rehabilitation Program and the Bridgewater Lakes Road Rehabilitation Program are set to be completed by June 2020.

The Fixing Country Roads Program was created to assist councils improve local roads to enhance the connectivity, reliability and efficiency of regional communities.
