MEDIA RELEASE - Bumper program to celebrate Library and Information Week

15 May 2019

The Glenelg Libraries will join libraries all across Australia to celebrate Library and Information Week 2019 from 20-26 May, offering a bumper program of events and the rollout of a number of exciting changes to the library service.

Adults and children alike can enjoy all that the Glenelg Libraries has to offer, with a storytime session, author event and Reader’s Feast booklovers event all taking place throughout the week.

Library and Information Week will also see the introduction of a number of changes to the library service.

From 20 May, library members can notice the following benefits as part of their membership:
• Introduction of new free Junior and Adult Library cards, with Junior Cards offering “fine-free’ borrowing.
• Automatic renewals for borrowers and option for email or SMS messages to be sent outlining full details of borrowed items.
• All items available for a three-week period and be able to be renewed including new releases (formerly two-week loans), CDs and DVDs. As before, items with holds will not be able to be extended.
• Launch of new free film and TV streaming service Kanopy

Library and Information Services Manager Yvette Parker said the changes were reflective of the Glenelg Libraries’ commitment to supporting the community.

“The purpose of the changes is create a service that is more accessible and supportive of the community of members who support the library,” she said.

“As part of the Libraries Change Lives state-wide promotion to boost the awareness and importance of public libraries, the changes are aimed at bringing new people in and saying thanks to the people who already visit.

“It’s a great benefit to members, something as simple as remembering to renew your item will now become a thing of the past as the automatic renewal system takes care of that for you.

“We hope to welcome existing library members and welcome a host of new members to the Glenelg Libraries as part of our bumper program to celebrate Library and Information Week. With events on throughout the week for all ages, there is something to appeal to everyone.”
