MEDIA RELEASE - Glenelg building up to International Day of People with Disability celebrations

18 September 2019

Help celebrate the achievements of all people and all abilities in the Glenelg Shire as part of the upcoming local celebrations for International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD).

The Glenelg Shire Council in partnership with Kyeema Support Services will host a free public event on Thursday 10 October at the Portland Civic Hall from 11am – 2pm to recognise the United Nations (UN) sanctioned day, which also raises awareness of the importance of inclusion and accessibility.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank invited all community members to attend the event, which will be one of the thousands of IDPwD events held across Australia.

“Every year International Day of People with Disability is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of people living with disabilities,” Cr Rank said.

“To celebrate the day at a local level we have a whole range of free entertainment on offer. There will be live music, displays and children’s activities, as well as a barbecue lunch.

“I encourage all individuals and organisations to attend our IDPwD event and help celebrate this important day, we all have a role to play in creating a welcoming, accessible and inclusive community for people of all backgrounds and abilities.”

International Day of People with Disability is celebrated worldwide every year and unites people around the world in celebrating and acknowledging the contributions, skills and achievements of people with disability.
