MEDIA RELEASE - Destination Action Plan for Nelson

Establishing Nelson as a gateway to the Great Ocean Road and strengthening its visitor economy are key objectives behind the creation of a new tourism roadmap for the coastal town.

Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism (GORRT) last Thursday hosted a Destination Action Plan workshop in conjunction with Glenelg Shire Council in the first steps towards building an action plan of key priorities for the short to medium term to increase the town’s competitiveness as a key tourist destination.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said more than 10 local leaders were involved in the preliminary session.

“Nelson is the third township to have a Destination Action Plan created as part of council’s partnership with Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism which aims to grow and strengthen our visitor economy, increasing visitor expenditure and dispersal, ” Cr Rank said.

“These plans are developed alongside our key tourism operators, business owners, and passionate locals, developing marketing strategies for the township to establish new opportunities for products and identify areas for new infrastructure.

“Ultimately, it’s about putting our shire on the map as a must-see destination, encouraging people to stay and explore, whilst promoting a common brand and identity that we can all support.”

Key areas for growth identified include establishing more attractions and improved infrastructure and creation of a signature event, to encourage greater visitation, lifting the town’s profile as a gateway to the Great Ocean Road region.

The session also highlighted the need to attract public transport connections, and need to build the population base, which is dominated by transient retirees, who have other residential bases.

Cr Rank said the session identified significant areas of opportunities, particularly around the townships vast nature-based attractions.

“We know that Nelson and the Lower Glenelg National Park are world class attractions with iconic caves, a beautiful river, excellent fishing and vast flora and fauna,” she said.

“This plan is about building on these strengths, highlighting how new events can be attracted, new accommodation can be established and how to bring new life to the infrastructure already on the ground. There are also great opportunities to partner with neighbours in South Australia to build new itineraries, drawing more of this cross-state visitor and friend market, in addition to international travellers.”
