MEDIA RELEASE - Planning projects out for comment

27 November 2019

Two key strategic planning documents that will influence the future of Portland are now out for public comment.

The draft Portland Strategic Framework Plan and draft Portland Rural Living Assessment are available for public viewing, with community members invited to have their say on the projects.

The draft Portland Strategic Framework Plan is a long-term land use plan for the urban area of Portland, defining key projects and infrastructure required to support growth.

The draft Portland Rural Living Assessment contains the key findings of the planning and economic assessment undertaken for the shire’s largest rural living precincts, including Bolwarra, Dutton Way, Allestree, and Narrawong. The findings outline the issues and opportunities for these precincts and will guide Council’s future rural land use planning activities.

Glenelg Shire Planning Manager Matt Berry said both plans would be influential in shaping the development in Portland.
“Both documents will help Council to make decisions on how to manage urban and rural living development, ensuring an adequate supply of developable land, both for commercial and rural living purposes, for the future,” he said.

Mr Berry said an information session would be held next week for community members to discuss the draft project plans.
“On Thursday 5 December we will be hosting a drop in session at the Portland Civic Hall for affected stakeholders and residents to view the plans and meet with members of the project team,” he said.

“I invite anyone interested in these projects to come along between 3pm – 6pm to have the opportunity to learn more about these projects and address any queries you may have,” he said.

Individual appointments with staff are also welcome.

The draft Portland Strategic Framework Plan and draft Portland Rural Living Assessment are both available to view online via the YourSay Glenelg website.

Submissions can be made on the draft projects via email to, online on Your Say Glenelg, or by mail to P.O. Box 152, Portland, Vic 3305. Submissions close 5.00pm Friday 20 December 2019.
