MEDIA RELEASE - Upgrades to key tourist routes

6 February 2020

Key tourist routes to Portland and Cape Bridgewater will be upgraded over the coming weeks as part of Glenelg Shire Council’s latest local road improvement projects.

Sections of Heath Road, Knights and Parkers Road and Bridgewater Lakes Road will undergo construction and improvement works; resulting in minor traffic delays for motorists and cyclists.

Glenelg Shire acting director of assets Edith Farrell said the works would complete the year-long project, which had been realised through funding from the Victorian Government.

“In 2019 council received $1.99 million funding from the Victorian Government’s Fixing Country Roads Program for these important works which will make a significant contribution to improve the safety of motorists, cyclists and importantly residents that live on these routes,” she said.

“Overall, the upgrades aim to improve safety on the popular tourist routes. Over the next few weeks works will see shoulder widening, major patching, sealing, drainage, line marking and guardrail installation along Bridgewater Lakes Road and Heath Road, including a number of curve sections and the affectionately known ‘Shuffler hill’.”

Ms Farrell said timeframes would differ for each section, with some works expected to be completed within the month.
“Works on Heath Road, Knights and Parkers Road are nearly complete, we expect construction to be finalised by the end of February,” she explained.

“Works on Bridgewater Lakes Road will commence shortly and are expected to be completed by the end of May 2020. We anticipate the overall project will be finalised by the start of June 2020.”

The Fixing Country Roads Program was created to assist councils improve local roads to enhance the connectivity, reliability and efficiency of regional communities.
