MEDIA RELEASE - Council secures funding for priority projects

19 May 2020

In a historic funding windfall the Glenelg Shire Council has received a multi-million dollar boost for three priority projects.

Council has secured a $4.2 million funding package for the Portland Foreshore Master Plan and the Local Port of Portland Bay’s Marine master plan as part of the Victorian Government’s Building Works program.

The Portland Foreshore Master Plan will receive $3 million for the replacement of the town jetty and installation of connecting pathways. An additional $1.2 million will be designated for the Portland Bay Marina extension and pontoon upgrades at the Trawler Wharf at the Local Port of Portland Bay.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said it was a historic moment following years of advocacy.

“This is a huge milestone with not one, but three, of our highest priority projects securing much needed funding,” she said.

“These projects will provide significant economic and social contributions for the Shire, as well as ensuring our world famous natural attractions reach their full recreation and tourism potential.

“The Portland Foreshore, one of the Shire’s most unique and popular assets, will undergo $3 million worth of improvements as part of the Portland Foreshore Master Plan. To the delight of community members this will see the Old Town Jetty replaced –a previously hugely popular spot to promenade and fish.

“The funding will also see the addition of a new pedestrian pathway, linking the many attractions along the foreshore area.

“The Portland Bay Marina extension will see the addition of 34 new berths, which will ensure our world class commercial and recreational fishing industry can continue to thrive and allow thousands of anglers from across Australia to access our facilities.

“The Trawler Wharf will also receive a significant funding boost to upgrade its capacity for commercial vessels. This will ensure any new and existing commercial fishing operators can continue to grow their businesses here in Portland, providing a significant economic boost.

“I thank the Victorian Government for their support in funding these important projects and I look forward to seeing works commencing.”
