MEDIA RELEASE - Glenelg Libraries set to continue after dark

23 June 2020

The Glenelg Libraries are set to open ‘after dark’ thanks to a successful funding bid.

The Portland Library has secured two years of funding through the Libraries After Dark program to extend opening hours in the evening to promote the facility as a community lounge and as an alternative to a gambling venue.

The Libraries After Dark program is an initiative of the Moreland City Council and supports libraries across Victoria through funds provided by the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation.

Library and Information Services Manager Yvette Parker said the program would create new opportunities for both the library and the community.

“Libraries After Dark provides a safe and welcoming alternative to gambling venues for those who might be struggling with gambling addiction. The grant will fully fund the provision of staffing and resources to provide opening hours to 10pm every Thursday evening at the Portland Library,” she said.

“Libraries are of course a great source of knowledge, but they are also a place to meet people and make new friends.

“By extending our opening hours, we hope that we can strengthen the Portland Library’s role as a community lounge and an inclusive space for people in the evening.”

The Glenelg Shire was successful in its application due to the high gambling losses recorded and the proximity of the Library to the Shire’s four gaming venues.

The After Dark program will commence in August 2020.
