MEDIA RELEASE - Brighten up the Glenelg Shire with the spirit of Christmas

19 November 2020

Businesses are being encouraged to bring a Christmas twinkle to their neighbourhood, with entries now open for the 2020 Light Up Glenelg Retail Window & Light Display Competition.

The competition, which forms part of the Glenelg Shire Council’s summer Light Up Glenelg campaign, asks traders across the Shire to adorn their premises with Christmas lights and decorations in a bid to win a marketing package with the Portland Observer or Casterton News.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the competition would brighten up the shire’s retail precincts and complement the existing COVID Safe Christmas celebrations, including the annual lighting of the Christmas trees in Portland and Casterton later this month.

“This is great opportunity for our business community to ‘Light Up’ the streets of Glenelg this festive season and ignite the community spirit,” she said.

“We thank the Casterton News and Portland Observer for sponsoring the competition - the total prize pool is valued at over $4000 and will offer a comprehensive marketing package for the two winning businesses.

“With bragging rights and impressive prizes on the line, I look forward to seeing what creative, colourful and festive designs are used and the collective visual impact this will have upon our retail precincts across the Shire.”

Cr Rank also reminded residents to shop locally and help support the region’s business community ahead of the busy Christmas season.

‘There are plenty of fantastic shops right here in our backyard for all your presents. Let’s help make everyone’s Christmas great this year by choosing local, and ensuring our business community can continue to thrive,” she said.

The competition will open from December 1, with judging will take place from Monday 14 December to Friday 18 December.

Entries will be split into two categories - Portland and surrounds and Casterton and surrounds. Entrants not located in Portland or Casterton can nominate which section they wish to enter their display into.

Full competition terms and conditions and entry forms for the 2020 Light Up Glenelg Retail Window & Light Display Competition are available online via the Your Say Glenelg website.
