MEDIA RELEASE - Twilight cinema at Nelson River Bank this January

19 December 2017

Prepare for a dance down memory lane this summer with Nelson’s Twilight Cinema event.

Eighties cult classic Footloose will hit the big screen at Nelson’s River Bank on Sunday 7 January as part of the latest pop-up outdoor cinema roadshow with live music and activities beginning at 4pm to late.

Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the event would coincide with the town’s popular Twilight Markets.

“The Glenelg River is the perfect place to be this summer being one of the shire’s most popular destinations throughout the warmer months,’ Cr Rank said.

“It is not very often you get the chance to watch a movie on a cinema sized screen while sitting on the river bank enjoying a summer’s evening with friends and family.

“With pop-up bars and food trucks, the only thing you need to bring is a picnic rug, bean bag and something warm to put on as the night goes on,” she said.

Entry to the cinema is only a gold coin donation with all proceeds going to the Nelson Community Events group who are fundraising for the upcoming Road to River Festival.

Nelson Hotel owner and Road to River committee member Donna Fry said hundreds of people were expected to attend the evening.

“We are grateful to the Glenelg Shire and Twilight Cinema for providing this unique outdoor cinema experience to our community,” Mrs Fry said

Glenelg Shire Council marketing and tourism manager Liz McKinnon said Nelson and the iconic Glenelg River were expected to boom over the summer months following the release of a new television commercial, which would be showcased on the evening.

“Three, new 30 second commercials titled Nelson – Gateway to the Glenelg River debuted over the weekend on the WIN TV network, in addition to a social media campaign, highlighting the coastal town’s key attractions, which has attracted thousands of views,” Ms McKinnon said.

“A number of local families, business owners and some willing tourists assisted with the two-day shoot led by Glenelg Shire Council’s tourism and marketing unit in conjunction with local filmmakers Powerhouse Productions.

“It is promising to see the number of visitors passing through Nelson growing over the past few months and there is no doubt this Twilight Cinema event will be popular during this peak camping season,” she said.
