MEDIA RELEASE - Nominate your local hero

14 June 2018

The Glenelg Shire is calling on community members to recognise their local heroes by nominating them for a 2019 Australia Day award.

The awards program, which is currently open for nominations until October, seeks to recognise the outstanding contributions made by community groups and individuals. Recipients are announced and presented on Australia Day at events held throughout the shire.

Alison Jenkins, who nominated 2018 Joint Citizen of the Year Sharron Gill for the prestigious award, says she was proud to see Mrs Gill’s long standing contributions to the Casterton community formally recognised.

“Sharron’s continued dedication, support and involvement in local events, clubs and organisations ensured she was a most worthy recipient of Citizen of the Year,” she said.

“Nominating her was an obvious choice and it was lovely to see her recognised for all of her achievements. Casterton is so very fortunate to have someone such as Sharron who actively volunteers her time across many groups and organisations.”

Ms Jenkins encouraged other community members to nominate their local heroes for an award in 2019.

“If you know someone who has made an impact on your life and the lives of others in your local community, take the opportunity to nominate them for a 2019 Australia Day award,” she said.

“The few minutes it takes to complete a nomination will ensure help our hard working volunteers receive the recognition they deserve.”

Categories for the 2019 Australia Day awards are:
• Citizen of the Year - awarded to a Shire resident aged over 25
• Young Citizen of the Year - awarded to a Shire resident aged under 25
• Senior Citizen of the Year - awarded to a Shire resident aged 60 or over
