MEDIA RELEASE - Portland CBD to light up

19 June 2018

Portland’s Central Business District is set to light up, with a street lighting renewal project to be rolled out in the township’s main retail precincts over the coming weeks.

A total of 46 new LED street lights will be installed along Percy and Bentinck streets from 24 June, replacing the existing infrastructure with a more energy efficient and higher quality lighting system.

Glenelg Shire Council environmental sustainability coordinator Adam Smith said the project would provide direct benefits to both businesses and customers, reinvigorating the CBD.

“This new LED lighting system will provide a higher quality of light output, ensure greater security and safety for both pedestrians and vehicles and allow businesses to have greater freedom with night time opening hours. There will be numerous benefits and opportunities which will enhance the current shopping experience for community members,” he said.

“Specifically, 14 new lights will be installed in Bentinck street and 32 in Percy street, all fitted with smart technology as the shire continues to innovate with key digital infrastructure.

“As a result, the new infrastructure will provide a reduction in electrical costs and ongoing maintenance costs to council, the project is a win all round.”

Mr Smith reminded residents that there would be minor delays and road closures during the installation process.

“The safe removal and replacement of the CBD lights will involve the closure of sections of Percy street in both directions on 24 June and Bentinck street in one direction on 1 July,” he said.

“This will impact vehicular access and parking along these sections of the street, but should not affect pedestrian access along the footpath. I advise residents to avoid driving in the CBD area on these dates if possible.”
