MEDIA RELEASE - Glenelg tops field for transparency

5 September 2018

Glenelg Shire has proven its title as the most transparent council in south west Victoria following the release of a new State Government survey.

The Local Government Performance Reporting Framework showed Glenelg Shire had only 0.97 per cent of its meetings in camera.

This compared to other neighbouring municipalities which rated as high as 16 per cent. The survey showed some Victorian council’s were hosting as much as 42 per cent of ordinary and special council meeting decisions behind closed doors.

The survey questioned council’s state-wide in its latest compilation for the Know Your Council Website.

The positive results follows Glenelg Shire being named one of Victoria’s best council’s for community engagement in the State Government led 2018 Community Satisfaction Survey where a third of participants rated council’s customer service as ‘very good’.

Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the latest survey results were testament to council’s hard work, collaborating directly with the community and lobbying in their interests.

“We are here as elected representatives for our shire and it is paramount that the voices and concerns of our community are being heard. That is why our council is open and transparent about all of the decisions that are made within our chamber because it is critical that our community voices are heard and reflected,” Cr Rank said.

“These results further strengthen the high scorecard of the Community Satisfaction Survey which positioned Glenelg as a state leader in customer service and community engagement – a further reflection of the hard work of our dedicated council staff.

“Our regular Listening Posts and roll out of community consultation platforms such as the Your Say Glenelg website ensure that council is approachable and always engaged with the community. We maintain regular profile on our social media channels and issues regular media to ensure our community are informed, further strengthening our communication lines.”
