MEDIA RELEASE - Casterton to host bushfire awareness event

10 October 2018

Glenelg Shire residents are invited to attend an upcoming bushfire awareness event to learn how to be fire ready this summer.

The Casterton Bushfire Awareness event will be held on Monday 22 October from 10am, offering expert advice and guidance on how community members can protect themselves and their family from the threat of bushfire.

Glenelg Shire Cr Karen Stephens, chair of the Glenelg Municipal Emergency Management Planning Committee, said the event was an ideal opportunity for residents to test out their fire plan.

“As we move into warmer and drier conditions, now is a crucial time for families to minimise any bushfire risks at their property and ensure their fire plan is up to date,” she said.

“The theme for the event is ‘are we ready?’ calling on residents to be prepared and plan for what to do before, during and after the event of a fire. Representatives from emergency agencies such as the State Emergency Service (SES), Country Fire Authority (CFA), Victoria Police, Parks Victoria, Forest Fire Management (FFM) and Glenelg Shire Council will be on hand to provide expert advice on fire safety.”

Cr Stephens said the event would appeal to all family members with children able to see and touch modern firefighting equipment on the day, as well as a state of the art fire modelling demonstration.

“There will be an interactive element to the day, with attendees able to see firsthand the rapid spread of bushfire through Phoenix modelling,” she said.

“Phoenix Rapidfire modelling is a tool that Victorian fire services use to predict fire behaviour in a local context, dependant on weather conditions, fuel type, terrain and ignition points. This technology will be used to create a local scenario of a bushfire near Casterton, allowing participants to assess and apply their own fire plan.

“I encourage all residents to make the most of this free family friendly event and learn how to best protect our community this summer.”

The Casterton Bushfire Awareness event will take place from 10am – 12pm at the Casterton-Sandford Football Netball Clubrooms at Island Park. The event will be followed by a community lunch with emergency displays and demonstrations.
