MEDIA RELEASE - Enjoy the big screen and support a local cause this summer

16 November 2018

Glenelg Shire Council invites you to pull out your favourite deck chair and relax this summer watching a classic movie under the stars whilst supporting a local not-for-profit group.

Council’s tourism and events team is taking its popular pop-up cinema on the road from November to February in an effort to support the region’s volunteers, to assist in raising much needed funds for important projects and charities.

The road show, which includes five locations, begins at the Heywood Town Green on Friday 30 November with the Heywood Pioneer Wagon Shed committee hosting a children’s night with the screening of popular animation Ferdinand.

The event will include free children’s activities, face painting, barbecue, plus a huge selection of markets.

Later screenings will be held in Portland, Casterton and Nelson throughout the summer months.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said council was pleased to be able to share its pop-up cinema asset to assist hard working local volunteers to fundraise.

She said the groups were successful following an expression of interest process which attracted 14 applications.

“Our popular twilight cinema events have become a must-do on the summer events calendar, attracting thousands of people to our shire and much-needed funds for charity,” Cr Rank said.

“This year we wanted to hand the reigns exclusively to our local volunteer groups to ensure they could control the look and feel of the fundraiser and tailor the generation of funds direct to their project of need.

“Thousands of dollars have been raised by these council coordinated events in previous years and we are confident that this figure is going to grow over the coming months as we take the screen to all corners of the shire, supporting our hard working volunteers and acting as leverages to bring visitors into the region.”

Cr Rank said council was a partner in each of the events, with the local groups controlling all event coordination.

The cinema roadshow includes:
• Friday 30 November – Heywood Town Green hosted by Heywood Pioneer Wagon Shed
• Sunday 6 January 2019 – Riverside markets and cinema hosted by Nelson Community Events
• Friday 15 February 2019 – Relay for Life, Hanlon Park, Portland
• Friday 22 February 2019 - Twilight Gardens hosted by Rotary Club of Portland Bay
• Date to be confirmed - event hosted by Casterton Memorial Hospital
