MEDIA RELEASE - Have your say on open space

27 November 2018

Glenelg Shire Council is inviting comments from the community on its draft strategy to protect, enhance and guide future investment in public open spaces.

The draft 2019 Glenelg Shire Open Space Strategy was endorsed for public exhibition in early 2019 at tonight’s Ordinary Council Meeting. The strategy is a 10 year framework designed to guide the future planning and functions of open spaces, while exploring new investment opportunities.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank encouraged community members to review the document and provide feedback on how open spaces could continue to meet the needs of a diverse community.

“The draft Open Space Strategy provides a clear vision for what we want and need in regards to open space and provides the direction for what needs to be done to help council achieve this,” she said.

“The strategy will enable identification of the most important projects which will deliver the best outcomes for the community and guide investment in open space, including parks, gardens, sports reserves and conservation reserves.

“Open space provides a wide range of benefits to individuals and groups, such as improved physical and mental health, as well as protecting local character and visual amenity. I encourage all community members to take the time to review this important draft document.”

Key priorities for the draft strategy include:

• Planning: an open space network that is planned for in a sustainable manner;
• Provision: an open space network that is equitable, diverse and meets the needs of all members of the community;
• Connections: an open space network that is easy to navigate and well connected;
• Protection: an open space network that protects, enhances, promotes and celebrates the shire’s environmental and cultural heritage values;
• Design: an open space network that is well designed and encourages active, healthy and fulfilling lifestyles;
• Management: an open space network that is well managed.

The draft 2019 Glenelg Shire Open Space Strategy will open for public exhibition and comment from 23 January 2019 and will close 13 February 2019.
