MEDIA RELEASE - Great Vic Bike Ride to pedal into Portland

28 November 2018

The state’s greatest bike ride will be coming to the Glenelg Shire next year as part of a new look cross-border itinerary.

The Great Victorian Bike Ride has announced a new route for the iconic event in 2019, making a stop in Portland as part of the 600km 10 day journey.

The 2019 tour will now begin along the Limestone Coast on Friday 22 November and then travel across the border to the Great Ocean Road and through the Great Otway National Park, finishing in Torquay on Sunday 1 December. Participants will ride into Portland on Monday 25 November.

The Great Victorian Ride was established in 1984 by Bicycle Network Victoria and sees more than 5000 cyclists from across the state come together to celebrate a love of cycling in picturesque regional settings.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said council was thrilled to welcome back the event to the shire.

“Council is excited to once again host The Great Vic Bike Ride in the shire after successful campaigns in both 2009 and 2013,” she said.

“The anecdotal feedback we received from the riders who attended these events was overwhelming positive, with participants nominating Portland and Nelson as both their favourite days of riding and the most welcoming of townships. The riders also noted the bus tours provided in Nelson as a particular highlight of their journey, stating that the tour guides were ‘fabulous’ and ‘fantastic’.

“With this feedback in mind, we hope to once again impress and delight riders with our generous hospitality and stunning natural landscapes, such as our dramatic coastline and slow rolling hills, enticing them to visit our shire once again.

“In fact statistics from the 2017 event have shown that 66 per cent of participants return to the towns that they have visited within 12 months and 53 per cent bring with them two or more people.

“We anticipate that as a result of this event the Glenelg Shire can establish itself as one of the state’s premier destinations for both cyclists and tourists alike.”
