MEDIA RELEASE - Australia Day guest speakers announced

11 January 2019

Sustainable living and community service will be the focus of this year’s Australia Day celebrations in the Glenelg Shire, following the announcement of the guest speakers for the 2019 Australia Day civic events.

Television chef and lifestyle icon Paul West will present at the Portland Australia Day ceremony from 9am at the Memorial Triangle, and decorated naval officer Paul Cottier will headline the Casterton Australia Day ceremony from 9am at Island Park.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said both speakers would provide a unique insight into what it means to be Australian.

“We are delighted to announce Paul West and Paul Cottier as our guest speakers for the 2019 Australia Day civic events. Both men have achieved great success in their respective fields and have travelled Australia extensively, providing varied reflections on the importance of community spirit at both a local and national level,” she said.

“Paul West will particularly discuss the importance of living a sustainable life and leading by example for the community and Paul Cottier will reflect on his long career in the Royal Australian Navy Band, including his experience performing for coalition forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“Alongside presentations from our guest speakers, the Australia Day events will also feature a citizenship ceremony, welcoming four new citizens to our shire, and the presentation of the Australia Day Awards.

“I invite all community members to come down and enjoy these events and celebrate the many great things about our country; the people, the land, our diversity, our indigenous cultures, our freedom and democracy and our enduring spirt of mateship and fairness.”

A free barbecue breakfast and entertainment will be on offer at both Portland and Casterton from 8 am before the formalities commence at 9am.

Council also supports community organised activities in Heywood, Merino and Nelson. Further information on Australia Day events in the Glenelg Shire can be found via the Glenelg Shire website at
