MEDIA RELEASE - Countdown to Hooked on Portland

18 January 2019

With only one week left to go, Glenelg Shire Council is busily preparing for what will be a jam-packed January long weekend for the 2019 Hooked on Portland festival.

Hooked on Portland, held in partnership with the Victorian Fisheries Authority, will be held across 26 and 27 January at the Portland Foreshore, offering a variety of free entertainment for all ages.

Mayor Cr Anita Rank expected more than 10,000 visitors to flock to the region as a result of the festivities.
“Hooked on Portland was launched in 2018 with resounding success, generating more than $2.5 million into the local economy,” she said.
“This year, we anticipate even greater visitation to our region as Hooked on Portland continues to become a recognisable brand. Headlining our festivities this year is television chef and sustainability advocate Paul West of River Cottage Australia fame, who boasts a loyal national following.
“As part of the Saturday schedule, West will be performing cooking demonstrations at 11 am and 3pm, as well as a book signing session at 1:30 pm, all held at the Portland Yacht Club.”
Recreational fishers will once again have the opportunity to reel in a winning catch as part of the Hooked on Portland fishing competition. The weekend long competition will be open to six species, with cash prizes of up to $250 on offer.

“We are extremely excited to once again feature a fishing competition, last year’s competition was incredibly competitive with more than 180 registered entrants from right across Australia vying for a cash prize,” Cr Rank said.

Australian singer-songwriter ASTA will headline the live music schedule, supported by Australian band 19-Twenty on January 26. Live performances from Josh Rawiri, The New Savages, Wallace and Ben Walker will also take place throughout Saturday afternoon and evening.

“ASTA has performed with some of the biggest names in international music such as Ellie Goulding and rapper All Day and will bring an exciting blend of contemporary and pop music to wow the crowd,” said Cr Rank.

“Portland is proud to welcome someone of such high calibre to the main stage, and we hope she will inspire our local talent who will be performing on Sunday, 27 January.

“There really is something for everyone at the Hooked on Portland with laser tag, sporting activities and clinics and art sessions, as well as the national skate, BMX and scooter competitions at the Portland Skate Park.

“The youth zone will also be more than just skates, with live entertainment running from 11am-7pm from talented local DJ’s Shaun King, DJ Legion, Chegz and DJ Fairweather.

“With free entertainment that will delight the whole family, all roads lead to Portland this January long weekend.”
