MEDIA RELEASE - Dartmoor families set to benefit from childcare subsidies

4 March 2019

Families in Dartmoor will soon be able to access subsidised childcare services thanks to the advocacy efforts of Glenelg Shire Council.

Council has secured a landmark fee subsidy arrangement for Dartmoor Children’s Centre following six months of negotiations with the Federal Government, providing significant fee reductions for eligible families.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said it was a fantastic ‘win’ for the Dartmoor community.

“When the new Commonwealth Childcare Subsidy rules commenced in July 2018, council maximised on an opportunity to make sure families in Dartmoor could benefit. It has taken considerable negotiations to obtain the approval, but the perseverance has well and truly paid off,” she said.

“The new fee arrangement will mean families using Dartmoor Children’s Centre are eligible for the same fee subsidies through Centrelink as those using our childcare centres in Portland and Casterton.

“It is a great outcome and will help to ensure equity for our rural-based families.”

Cr Rank said the fee subsidy would also assist with long term planning for the rural early learning centre.

“Council has been working closely with the Dartmoor community over the past three years on a Business Plan for the centre,” she said.

“The Dartmoor Childcare Planning Group, made up of school, parent, community and council representatives, are absolutely delighted that the fee subsidy arrangement has been secured. We can now best plan for affordable and viable education and care options for the future.”

Dartmoor Children’s Centre will offer kindergarten and childcare programs with the new subsidy from term two.

Families wishing to enrol their child in any of Dartmoor’s early learning programs are advised to contact the Children’s Services unit on 5522 2211.
