MEDIA RELEASE - PDH to operate Maternal Child Health Services

27 March 2019

Portland District Health has been appointed Glenelg Shire’s new contractor of Maternal Child Health Services.

Glenelg Shire Council last night voted for the shire’s largest health service provider to deliver maternal and child health services, including universal, enhanced and early childhood immunisation services’.

The appointment follows an extensive tender process dating back to 2018, after council experienced long-running issues recruiting maternal child health nurses – an issue facing many other councils.

Glenelg Shire community services director Edith Farrell said it was a welcomed contract appointment.

“This is an important tender contract which has been awarded in the best interest of our community, ensuring the region’s hard working health professionals are catering for our youngest shire residents and their families,” Ms Farrell said.

“This free service provides important universal health services for all families with children from birth to school age, focusing on parenting, promotion of health and development, early detection and intervention, and referral and social support.

“It is important families and their children are in good hands, working proactively to recognise any health or social issue during these critical early years.”

Portland District Health CEO Chris Giles said bringing the service under the PDH umbrella was a “perfect fit”.

“It will integrate our midwifery and maternal and child health services to provide a comprehensive women’s and children’s health service,” Ms Giles said.

“PDH was keen to tender for the contract because it fits well with our core objective to provide services and support to improve the health and wellbeing of our community. We want to support families to provide the best start to life for our babies and young children.”

The contract has been awarded for a period of three years, starting from 1 April 2019.

Council will support PDH, to ensure that families experience a seamless transition, throughout April.
