MEDIA RELEASE - Western Bulldogs Project inducts young leaders for 2019

28 March 2019

A group of motivated teenagers will learn how to become future leaders of the community as part of the 2019 Western Bulldogs Leadership Project, which announced its newest participants at an official welcome event.

Last night 18 participants from Portland, Casterton and Heywood and neighbouring communities were inducted into the popular leadership program that is administered by the Western Bulldogs Football Club with support from the Glenelg Shire Council.

Over a period of six months the participants will complete 9 workshops, complete an AFL Victoria Coaching Course and attend two camps, learning important leadership skills to assist with their community involvement and future careers.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the Western Bulldogs Leadership Project had become an iconic program for the region, helping to shape and nurture the leaders of tomorrow.

“The Glenelg Shire is fortunate to be one of 12 municipalities across Victoria that offers this unique and engaging youth leadership program. Throughout the six month period participants will have the chance to shape robust life skills, build connections with the local community and to create positive self-awareness in each individual,” she said.

“This is our sixth year partnering with the Western Bulldogs Leadership Foundation to deliver this program. Over this time we have offered over 80 participants the opportunity to partake in the program, equipping our future leaders for the challenges of tomorrow.

“We are pleased in 2019 to have the inclusion of two extra participants, taking our normal total from 16 to 18. Our aim was to ensure that we had a diverse and inclusive group that represents all communities from across the shire.

“Congratulations to all of our 2019 participants, we look forward to being involved in your leadership journeys throughout the year.”

Project inductees will commence their leadership journey with the first group camp next weekend, where they will develop their self-management, communication and team work skills.
