MEDIA RELEASE - Change in temperature at PLACE

29 March 2019

Portland Leisure and Aquatic Centre (PLACE) patrons would have noticed some minor fluctuations to the temperature of the facility’s indoor pool over the past few weeks due to changes to the heating network.

The centre has been running on a backup boiler while council has replaced two ageing gas boilers on its thermal loop (which provide the main source of heating for the pool). These boilers have now been replaced with more efficient condensing gas boilers.

As part of this transition to the thermal loop, the indoor pool has experienced some variations in temperature while the system has adjusted.

Glenelg Shire Council Director Assets Robert Alexander apologised for the temporary disruptions.

“Council apologises for the impacts this will have upon patrons’ use of the indoor pool at the popular leisure facility and appreciates their patience and understanding during this time,” he said.

“The pool may continue to experience some fluctuations in temperature until the target temperature is met. However as the system has already been transferred to the loop most of the issues have been resolved, allowing patrons to once again enjoy a stable temperature during swimming.”

Mr Alexander said the upgrade will provide significant economic and environmental benefits, highlighting council’s ongoing commitment and investment into the facility.

“Once the upgrade is fully functional, the pool will not only run more effectively, but also efficiently, reducing council’s overall gas usage,” he said.

“This will result in considerable ongoing environmental benefits for council for years to come and progress its transition to a more carbon neutral economy.”

Community members seeking further information are advised to contact council’s Customer Service Unit on 1300 GLENELG.
