MEDIA RELEASE - Council welcomes Alexandra Park funding

12 April 2019

The vision to transform Alexandra Park into an elite netball facility has been realised following a Federal funding commitment to redevelop the ageing netball courts.

Member for Wannon Dan Tehan MP last night confirmed $485,000 would be allocated to redevelop Alexandra Park’s netball courts through the Community Development Grant Program.

The funding will see the installation of new lights and construction of two new netball courts, replacing the existing non-compliant facilities.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank described the announcement as ‘fantastic news’, with the redevelopment the first step in the implementation of the Alexandra Park Master Plan which was endorsed by council earlier this year.

“Council is focused on supporting and encouraging women in sport and the netball courts at Alexandra Park were amongst the highest priorities for redevelopment in our shire, with compliance issues such as poor court run-off and inappropriate surfaces causing potential harm for the many junior and senior netball players who regularly use the facilities,” she said.

“The redevelopment will greatly improve playing conditions for both Westerns Football Netball Club and the South West District Football Netball League competition; ensuring netballers have safe and compliant courts to play on to perform at their best.

“Furthermore, the redevelopment will see the popular sporting venue showcased across the region. The installation of new compliant netball courts and lights will provide Westerns with the opportunity to host night games and final matches at Alexandra Park.

“I look forward to the commencement of this exciting project which will see the first stage of the process to transform Alexandra Park into a world class sporting precinct achieved.”

Council will provide in-kind support and manage the Alexandra Park netball court facility redevelopment.
