28 June 2019

An additional two cruise ships are bound for Portland, taking the city’s visiting vessels to 10 over the next three seasons.

Celebrity Cruises’ Azamara Journey and Hapag Lloyd’s MS Europa 2 have been added this week to the official Port of Portland’s cruise ship schedule. The Azamara Journey will dock on 28 December 2021, with the MS Europa 2 visiting on 21 January 2022.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the additional visits confirmed that Portland’s profile as a premier cruise destination was gaining the attention of the world’s top operators.

“We are extremely excited to see not just one, but another two five star vessel choose to stopover in Portland as part of their worldwide cruising itineraries,” she said.

“This announcement highlights Portland’s reputation a must-see cruise destination, with the city now regularly named amongst some of Australia’s most iconic locations in short style luxury cruising journeys.

“Council has been working tirelessly with the Port of Portland negotiating to get more bookings and the dividends are showing. We are extremely grateful to port chief executive
Greg Tremewen and his team for their continued support in making cruise ships a priority in their work plan.

“There are now 10 vessels scheduled to visit Portland in the next four years which is fantastic news, and discussions are continuing with some of the world’s biggest cruise lines to lock in more bookings into the future.”

The Azamara Journey will visit Portland as part of a 14 night voyage across Australia, departing Perth and visiting landmarks such as Margaret River, Kangaroo Island and Sydney before concluding in Melbourne.

The mid-size ship is described as a ‘luxury boutique hotel’, offering an intimate style of cruising to high end European passengers.

The MS Europa 2 will dock one month earlier to its sister ship MS Europa in 2022, with 500 European passengers on board. The ships will be a familiar face to locals, with both vessels visiting Portland in early 2017.
