MEDIA RELEASE - Women's learn to swim program returns

5 July 2019

Women in the Glenelg Shire are invited to test the waters and learn how to swim with a free adult swimming program returning this July.

Due to popular demand, the Women's Learn to Swim program will be reoffered through the support of the Glenelg Shire Council, the Portland Leisure and Aquatic Centre (PLACE) and VicHealth’s This Girl Can campaign.

The free program will run for six weeks from 17 July through to 21 August at the PLACE, with sessions open to women of all ages.

Glenelg Shire recreation coordinator Hayley Rowe was delighted with the success of the innovative program, which was launched in May as the first free program of its kind for the region.

“Thanks to funding through VicHealth’s This Girl Can campaign, Council and the PLACE are pleased to once again offer this program to ensure all women can learn to swim in a safe and supportive environment,” she said.

“The results of the program speak for themselves; it was fantastic to see a group of women who were once unsure of swimming to come away with the confidence to take to the water on their own.

“We hope to welcome a new cohort of women through the program this July and help develop their swimming skills. These sessions are capped, so I advise anyone interested to please register their interest ahead of time.”

Ms Rowe advised Casterton residents that the program will be also be rolled out in the township during the outdoor swimming season.

“Casterton women are invited to make a note in their diaries, the free Women's Learn to Swim program will be offered during the summer period when the outdoor swimming pool is open for use. Further details and dates will be confirmed closer to summer,” she said.

“We hope to see women of all ages taking up this great opportunity to learn a valuable life skill without the burden of cost or travel.”

This Girl Can – Victoria is a motivational campaign from VicHealth, seeking to inspire more women to get more active more often. Research reveals over half of Victorian women worry about being judged when exercising, a fear which is stopping them from getting active.
