MEDIA RELEASE - Data, science and biotechnology on the agenda for 2040

30 August 2019

The future of the Glenelg Shire in 2040 may have no boundaries with new-age concepts such as biotechnology and data science set to be explored by a team of experts at the Glenelg Shire’s 2040 Launch Event.

Future Crunch, a forward thinking team of scientists, artists, researchers and entrepreneurs, will be keynote speakers at the Glenelg Shire 2040 Launch Event on Monday 16 September at the Portland Civic Hall from 5:30pm.

Presenting on behalf of Future Crunch will be co-founders Dr Angus Hervey and Tane Hunter, who boast experience with some of the world’s biggest agencies in their respective fields.

Dr Angus Hervey is a political economist and journalist specialising in the impact of disruptive technologies on society. He holds a PhD in International Political Economy from the London School of Economics and was the founding community manager of Random Hacks of Kindness, a global initiative from Google, IBM, Microsoft, NASA and the World Bank to create solutions to social challenges using technology.

Tane Hunter is a cancer researcher, bio-informatician, and science communicator. He holds a Masters in Bioinformatics from the University of Melbourne, and has worked for the Melbourne Royal Children’s Hospital diagnosing rare genetic diseases. He is currently completing his PhD at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre to improve treatments for people suffering from cancer using DNA and artificial intelligence.

The duo will set the tone for a futuristic vision for the Glenelg Shire.

“Future Crunch’s presentation at the Glenelg Shire 2040 Launch Event will focus on science and technology, which are key drivers in creating a world that is more peaceful, connected and abundant,” said Dr Hervey.

“Our mission is to foster intelligent, optimistic thinking about the future, and to empower people to contribute to a 21st century that works for everyone.

“We look forward to inciting dynamic and mind-provoking discussions with eventgoers and to help inspire a vision for the Glenelg Shire community that is exciting, inclusive and courageous.”

The Glenelg Shire 2040 Launch event will also feature presentations from statisticians, futurists and other local experts to help unpack the key priorities for the community’s collective future.
