MEDIA RELEASE - Aboriginal Scholarship Program now open

2 September 2019

The search is on for local Indigenous or Torres Strait Islander youth in the Glenelg Shire who have ambitions for further study.

Applications are now open for the Glenelg Shire’s 2020 Aboriginal Education Scholarship program. The annual program offers two scholarships for Glenelg Shire based indigenous youth aged between 16-24 to undertake further study at school, university or TAFE.

Previous scholarship recipient Marley Bryant is now one step closer to achieving her academic and career goals thanks to the program.

Marley used her scholarship to assist with completing a Certificate IV in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care, providing her with the relevant skills to enhance her current role as a Community Services Trainee at Winda-Mara Aboriginal Corporation.

Marley described the scholarship program as ‘life-changing’.

“The scholarship program has been rewarding on so many levels, the financial support I received has allowed me to pursue my passion in Aboriginal health,” she said.

“As part of my role with the Community Services team I work with local indigenous youth to build lasting relationships and re-engage them in the school system. I absolutely love what I do, the kids put a smile on my face every day, and I am so glad I have the opportunity to make a difference in the community.

“My TAFE studies compliment the work I do on a daily basis, providing me a deeper understanding of aspects such as legislation, current trends and care strategies.

“I would encourage all eligible young people in the Glenelg Shire who are considering further study to make the most of this fantastic opportunity and apply for an Aboriginal Education Scholarship.”

Two scholarships are available to the value of $3000 each and funds can be used to assist with course fees, travel expenses, course requirements, compulsory clothing/footwear and tutoring.

The successful applicants must reside in the Glenelg Shire however applicants can be undertaking study at educational institutions located in another municipality.

Scholarship applications close 5pm on Friday 18 October.
