MEDIA RELEASE - Low cost cat desexing clinic comes to Portland

11 September 2019

Calling all cat owners, Glenelg Shire Council in collaboration with RSPCA Victoria will be offering low-cost cat desexing programs this October.

A mobile cat desexing clinic will be held in Portland from Monday 14 October to Friday 18 October, with qualified veterinary staff offering a reduced desexing fee of $25 for males and $50 for females (this fee also includes a free microchip and council registration where required).

Glenelg Shire Council Local Laws Team Leader Jacqui Muskee said following the success of the low cost desexing clinic held earlier this year, the program was being re-offered at the new central location of the Portland Drill Hall.

“Council is pleased to again partner with RSPCA Victoria to offer a low-cost cat desexing program exclusively to Glenelg Shire residents,” she said.

“This low cost clinic is part of Council’s commitment to provide accessible and affordable options for desexing for pet owners, a key outcome of our Domestic Animal Management Plan 2017-21.

“Desexing your cat, whether male or female, is an important part of responsible pet ownership. One undesexed female cat and her female offspring alone can have 2,000 kittens in just two years, a staggering statistic.

“It is equally as important to desex male cats. Desexed male cats can help to reduce unwanted litters in our community, as well as reducing anti-social behaviours such as spraying.

“I encourage all pet-owners to make the most of this week-long clinic and book in their furry friends.”

Bookings for the Glenelg Shire mobile cat desexing clinic can be made online through Eventbrite, or by calling RSPCA Victoria on 9888 9822.

All cats must be in good health and aged between nine weeks – 10 years old.
