MEDIA RELEASE - Celebrating our seniors this October

16 September 2019

Glenelg Shire over 55’s will be treated to entertainment, magic and fun-focused activities this October for the 2019 Victorian Seniors Festival.

As part of the state-wide celebrations a number of events will be offered throughout Portland, Casterton and Heywood during Wednesday 16 October – Thursday 24 October, with all older residents invited to attend.

Glenelg Shire Community and Social Support Coordinator Bryce Spencer said the week was a great opportunity to celebrate the valuable contribution older community members made to the shire.

“Seniors Week is a great opportunity to recognise, celebrate and support the vital role over 55’s play in our community. Previously we offered the popular Seniors Great Day Out event, however this year we have decided to expand the celebrations and run a week long calendar of events,” he said.

“There is something for everybody, and most are being offered at either a reduced cost or free of charge. It’s a great time to venture out, try something new and meet and connect with other local seniors.”

The weeklong celebrations begin on Wednesday 16 October with a performance by award winning country music artist James Blundell at the Casterton Town Hall from 2pm, with a small entry fee of $10.

Other events throughout the week include the Elio Simonetti Magic Show at the Fawthrop Community Centre on Tuesday 22 October, Unknown Amazon - An Afternoon with Janet Bird, former Senior Conservator at the British Museum at the Portland Library on Monday 21 October, Waltsing Australia performance at the Portland Arts Centre on Wednesday 23 October and a Calamity Jane film screening in Heywood and Casterton on Thursday 24 October.

Copies of the Glenelg Shire Senior’s Week program of events can be collected from council’s customer service centres, Glenelg Libraries, the Portland Leisure and Aquatic Centre, the Fawthrop Community Centre and online via the Glenelg Shire website.

Copies can also be posted by calling 1300 GLENELG.
