MEDIA RELEASE - Heart soaring, toe tapping fun at arts season launch

19 November 2019

Damian Callinan is promising a heart soaring, side aching, toe tapping evening of fun when he takes the reigns at the Portland Arts Centre (PAC) leading guests through a sneak peek of the ARTSglenelg 2020 season program next week.

The acclaimed actor, writer and comedian, best known for his appearances in Skithouse and Spicks and Specks, will showcase the broad ranging ARTSglenelg 2020 calendar which features live comedy, drama, music and exhibitions.

ARTSglenelg manager Susie Lyons said the PAC was thrilled to have Callinan, who is a multi-award-winning comedian, actor and writer and recognised for his cheeky repertoire, host the evening on Friday 29 November.

She said the launch would preview a “fabulous show” Sun Rising, a tribute to America’s home of rock and roll Sun Record’s - the full version of which is included in the 2020 calendar, featuring songs from Elvis, Johnny Cash and BB King.

“A key focus for council is ensuring that our community has access to world class cultural experiences and ARTSglenelg will deliver this objective with dozens of touring artists and wonderful exhibitions not only at the PAC, but right across the shire over the next 12 months,” she said.

“This season offers an extremely diverse program, catering for all tastes, ages and interests. There is everything from circus performers, country music to orchestral wonders, live theatre and children’s shows.

“Our team is extremely proud of what we have programmed, and we think audiences will be eager to get their hands-on tickets once all is revealed on Friday night. We have been working closely with community artists to ensure the exhibitions reflect our contemporary creative voices.”

To help set the scene, Varietyville will perform their thrilling fusion of ridiculous and bizarre circus acts at the launch.

Fresh from performing at the Sydney Opera House and on the global festival circuit, physical comedy performers Dandyman and Ruby Rubberlegs will bring their masterful mayhem to the stage.

Ms Lyons said the duo was “outrageously funny”, fusing the most unique ridiculous and bizarre acts ever seen.

“Varietyville takes variety to a whole new level,” she mused.

“There are bite sized pieces of masterful magic, chaotic clowning and preposterous physical feats. Guests will walk away in wonder as they journey into the absolute absurd. They are a hoot.”

Doors for the season launch open at 5.45pm, with complimentary champagne on arrival, with the official launch at 6pm. This is followed by a break at 7pm for drinks and nibbles before Varietyville take to the stage at 7.30pm.

Tickets are $10 each and available at www.portlandartscentre.com.au
