MEDIA RELEASE - Countdown to cruise ships

16 February 2019

The countdown has begun until cruise ship season hits Portland, with final preparations well underway to welcome four vessels to the city during the summer period..

Cruise and Maritime Voyages’ Vasco Da Gama will be the first ship of the season, docking on Sunday 29 December and welcoming more than 1200 international passengers to shore.

Holland America’s MS Maasdam will follow shortly after, arriving into Portland on Thursday 2 January with a similar number of international cruise guests. The summer cruise season will also feature visits from the Seven Seas Navigator on Friday 21 February and the Seabourn Encore on Saturday 14 March 2020.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the additional visits confirmed that Portland’s profile as a premier cruise destination was gaining the attention of the world’s top operators.

“We are extremely excited to see four vessels choose to stopover in Portland this summer as part of their worldwide cruising itineraries,” she said.

“Portland has become a destination of choice thanks to our great on-shore ratings, which has been largely achieved thanks to the significant efforts of our local community who have got behind this important tourism opportunity.

“There are now 10 vessels scheduled to visit Portland in the next four years which is fantastic news, and discussions are continuing with some of the world’s biggest cruise lines to lock in more bookings into the future. Previous cruise ship seasons have injected more than $1 million into the local economy, particularly into the hospitality and tourism sectors, and we predict these visits will once again provide a significant economic boost for local traders.”

Cruise ship passengers will enjoy a range of offerings as soon as they disembark in Portland such as community markets; live music and cultural performances by the Winda-Mara Dancers.

Passengers have also booked a range of local tours to local attractions such as Cape Bridgewater, a ride on the Cable Tram and Glenelg River cruising tours with a stopover at the Princess Margaret Rose Caves.

Shuttle buses will transport passengers across the local area showcasing key tourist destinations and CBD sites to allow passengers to explore local retail stores and cafes.
