MEDIA RELEASE - Heritage loan scheme increases

18 December 2019

Heritage home and business owners in the Glenelg Shire will be able to access additional funding for the conservation of their properties thanks to the review of a local grant scheme.

Councillors last night endorsed a change to the Heritage Loan Scheme at the December Ordinary Council Meeting, voting to increase the individual grant application amount from $5,000 to $10,000.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the aim of the loan increase was to promote a greater uptake of the scheme, as well as encouraging conservation works of a greater value.

“The Heritage Loan Scheme was introduced to assist heritage property owners by providing low interest loans and grants to help fund restoration works to recognised buildings, sites or objects of heritage value in the Glenelg Shire, protecting some of our oldest and most iconic buildings,” she explained.

“Recommendations from the Heritage Advisory Committee has prompted council to review the funding amounts on offer for the Scheme, and if they are of a sufficient value. We have determined that to encourage more large-scale conservation works and to see greater use of the scheme, the application amount should significantly increase.

“Thanks to these new changes, property owners can now apply for a maximum of 50 per cent of the value of the works to an amount of $10,000, twice the original application amount.

“We anticipate that this increase will see more property owners undertaking works to protect the heritage of their buildings.”

Property owners can apply for the Scheme if:
a) the heritage asset, object or place listed in the Glenelg Planning Scheme’s Heritage Overlay, or
b) the heritage asset, object or place proposed for inclusion in the Heritage Overlay, or
c) the heritage asset, object or place has been defined by the Glenelg Shire Heritage Advisor.

Applications for the Heritage Loan Scheme are open all year. Potential applicants are encouraged to contact council's Heritage Advisor prior to submitting an application.
