MEDIA RELEASE - Upgrades to Drill Hall carpark

17 February 2020

New parking bays, pedestrian pathways and additional wheelchair access will be the benefits of an upgrade to the carpark at Portland’s Drill Hall.

Parking at the Bentinck street facility, which is a popular space for weddings and conferences, will be unavailable from Monday 24 February for an eight week period whilst compliance works and accessibility upgrades are undertaken at the area.

The improvements will see improved interaction between vehicles and pedestrians with a designated entry and exit point, defined parking, elimination of vegetation hazards and additional pedestrian pathways and wheelchair ramps to the Drill Hall.

Glenelg Shire director assets Edith Farrell said whilst there would be some necessary disruptions to parking, the project would ensure the facility was more inclusive to users.

“The car park will be completely re-configured with a new design to best accommodate motorists and pedestrians to make this already popular recreation space a much more desirable and accessible place for all to visit,” she said.

“The most noticeable improvement will be the sealing of the existing gravel surface which is currently uneven and pools water during wet weather events. A designated flow of one-way traffic into the area and new ramps and pedestrian pathways will make this space extremely easier to access.

“Overall the project will see the Drill Hall better meet the needs of our growing community and ensure all members of the public can access the facility with ease.”

Current hazardous vegetation, which poses ongoing risks for slips and falls for users, will be removed as part of the works. Native vegetation will planted in its place as part of council’s Urban Tree Policy.
