MEDIA RELEASE - A familiar friend returns to Portland

25 February 2020

Portland has maintained its reputation as Australia’s leading regional cruise destination with a familiar friend choosing to return to the city for a second visit in less than two years.

Regent Cruises’ Seven Seas Mariner will dock in to Portland on Sunday 8 March at 11am, welcoming more than 700 international passengers to shore.

The Seven Seas Mariner has modified its international cruising itinerary following uncertainty surrounding port entry and berth availability in various destinations in Asia. The vessel, which visited Portland in January 2019, has chosen to include the city in its new look itinerary due to positive passenger reviews, diversity of on-shore tours and it’s unique natural offerings.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the return visit highlighted Portland’s growing international cruising profile.

“Portland has become a destination of choice thanks to our natural deep sea port and great on-shore ratings, which has been largely achieved thanks to the significant efforts of our local community who have got behind this important tourism opportunity,” she said.

“We thank all the volunteers, tourism operators, business owners and staff who have worked tireless to enable Portland to achieve these glowing report cards and secure repeat visits from international cruise operators.

“Cruise ship visits have become a vital component of the shire’s flourishing events calendar and local economy, with previous visits injecting more than $1 million into the hospitality and tourism sectors.

“We look forward to another successful cruise ship visit for 2020 as we welcome the Seven Seas Mariner to Portland once again.”

The Seven Seas Mariner’s visit to Portland will mark the mid-way point of the cruise’s Australian leg of the 54 day itinerary. The ship departs from San Francisco, circumnavigating the Pacific Ocean visiting Hawaii, French Polynesia, Fiji and New Zealand before finishing in Singapore.

Throughout the day cruise ship passengers will enjoy a range of offerings as soon as they disembark in Portland such as community markets and live music. Shuttle buses will transport passengers across the local area showcasing key tourist destinations and CBD sites to allow passengers to explore local retail stores and cafes.
