MEDIA RELEASE - Youth set to swap, shop and recycle

6 March 2020

Calling all young people in the Glenelg Shire – give your unwanted clothes a new life while finding new items to love at a fun, sustainable event later this month.

A Youth Clothes Swap will take place on Saturday 21 March at the Portland Library from 11am, inviting youth aged between 12-25 years to refresh their wardrobe with hand-picked recycled pieces.

Glenelg Libraries’ Children’s and Youth Library Officer Casey Marlow said the event aimed to break the cycle of fast fashion and help young people in the shire embrace the idea of a sharing economy.

“Clothes swapping is a small, but effective way to help curb fashion waste. The trends are quite alarming - currently Australia is one of the biggest fashion wasters in the world, throwing out up to 30 kilograms of clothing a year per person,” she said.

“This event will help to remind young people that despite the convenience of fast fashion, there are more affordable and environmentally friendly options to refresh your wardrobe.

“Those interested in taking part in the swap are asked to drop their neat, clean clothes into the Portland Library from the Thursday 12 March. From there you will receive your shopping tokens, which you can then redeem at the Clothes Swap event later in the month to collect new pieces for your wardrobe.

“It will be first in, first pick of the clothing options, so make sure you arrive by 11am on Saturday 21 March to ensure you grab your favourite new, pre-loved pieces.

“With only a few weeks to go, it’s time to start sorting through your wardrobe to see which pieces you can donate and swap.”
