MEDIA STATEMENT - Covid-19 20 March 2020

20 March 2020

Protecting the health and safety of our community remains Council’s top priority. We are closely monitoring all health updates and are responding to important Federal and State Government directives to reduce social contact to help prevent the spread of Covid-19.

To date we have no reported cases of Covid-19 in our shire and let’s keep it this way.

In light of this unprecedented situation it can feel stressful, overwhelming and isolating. As we deal with these challenging circumstances it’s important to recognise that this event can impact people in different ways.

We encourage residents to continue to take reasonable precautions, consider others when you purchase supplies, refer only to credible information, practise self-care and seek additional support when required.

Now is the time to look after ourselves and each other. We will get through this, and as a community if we promote good hygiene, patience and compassion this difficult journey will be made easier.

We remind residents that despite the suspension of a number of community programs and events, as well as other non-essential services, essential services such as waste collection and home care will continue.

Our Customer Services Centres will remain open, however we ask that you keep visits to these sites to a minimum and instead to contact us using our website or phone. If visiting a Customer Service Centre please adhere to the hygiene and distancing protocols.

We have contingency plans in place to keep essential services running even in the event that our workforce is affected by Covid-19. Our priority is to continue providing support to vulnerable citizens many who are those that may be most seriously affected by this virus.

A public information hotline has been established by the Department of Health and Human Services to answer any queries from the community, general or health related. This hotline can be reached by calling 1800 675 398.

Please also continue to visit the Department of Health and Human Services website for the latest advice and information about coronavirus from the lead authorities.

Please continue to take good care of yourselves and those around you during this difficult time.
