MEDIA RELEASE - 2021 Australia Day events

Community members will recognise Australia Day in both new and traditional formats in the Glenelg Shire, with a number of virtual and physical civic events planned across the region.

Council facilitated Australia Day ceremonies in Portland and Casterton will differ this year, with current COVID event restrictions forcing changes to the annual large-scale public events.

In their place, small COVID Safe civic events will be held in Portland at the Civic Hall and at the Town Hall in Casterton, featuring the presentations of the 2021 Glenelg Shire Australia Day Award winners.

To ensure all community members can enjoy the official ceremonies, the Portland and Casterton events will be recorded and shared to the Glenelg Shire Council’s Facebook and YouTube channels.

Council supported community organised events in Heywood and Merino will continue with their traditional formats, holding public outdoor events in their townships.

The Promoting Heywood and District Committee will host Australia Day in Heywood on the banks of the Fitzroy River from 11:30am. The event will include the presentation of the Heywood Citizen of the Year, and a barbecue lunch will be on offer following the ceremony from the Heywood Lions and Heywood CWA.

The Merino Lions Club will also host a public event for Australia Day in Merino at the Merino Swimming Pool from 11:00am. The event will include the presentation will include the presentation of the Merino Citizen of the Year, and a barbecue lunch will be on offer prior to the official proceedings.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank encouraged community members to attend events in their local township, or to watch the official recording in the days after.

“It’s been a challenging year for our Shire, together we have faced adversity, embraced new opportunities and overcame substantial challenges,” she said.

“What better way to recognise all that we have achieved over the past 12 months by attending an Australia Day event in your township, or by viewing the official recording from Council’s social media channels.

“I assure community members who do not have access to technology and wish to attend either Portland or Casterton event, there are a limited number of general seating tickets available.

“To secure a seat, you must register your interest prior by contacting Council’s Events Unit on 1300 GLENELG, or by emailing sbridgewater@glenelg.vic.gov.au.”

The Portland Casterton 2021 Australia Day events are assisted by the Australian Government through the National Australia Day Council.

Town Hall, Casterton
8.00am – 10am - Breakfast, official proceedings, including the presentations of the Glenelg Shire Australia Day Award winners.

*Due to current COVID Safe restrictions, this event is strictly capped at an attendance capacity.
There are a limited number of general seating tickets are available. If community members wish to attend, they must register their interest prior by contacting Council’s Events Unit.

Banks of the Fitzroy River
11:30am - Official proceedings
12.15pm – 1:00pm BBQ lunch

• MERINO

11:00am – BBQ Lunch
12:00pm – Music provided by Julie Honey

• PORTLAND
Civic Hall, Portland
