Stored food products provide an ideal environment for insects and pests. Beetles, moths and mites are all insects who thrive in this kind of environment.
| | | |
| Prevention & Control | | Routine housekeeping measures such as regular cleaning of storage containers and/or storage shelving will reduce the potential for pest harborage.
This process also ensures rapid detection should an infestation be introduced for a recently purchased product.
If you find foodstuff that has been contaminated, there are two methods for control: | |
 | Remove the infested material and dispose of the foodstuff in a manner that will not spread the infestation | | Perform acceptable treatment if the infestation is in large amounts of food. Acceptable treatment methods can be fumigation, high temperatures or modified atmosphere. |

| Prevention Methods |
 | Ensure good hygiene practices (e.g. food equipment and food preparation surfaces are clean and sanitised after each use) | | Ensure that equipment, machinery and storage areas are regularly cleansed | | Maintain floors in good order and ensure that there are no cracks or crevices where food particles and dust can accumulate | | Received food goods should be inspected before entering the store to ensure that there is no infestation that can spread to other foodstuff | | Perform regular and extensive inspections throughout the premises | | Keep food away from walls and off the ground to assist in cleaning | | Discard any food that has been stored for an extended period of time | | Store food in insect proof containers |
