Portland Harbour Projects  Printer Friendly

This project has its basis in the Portland Bay Coastal Infrastructure Plan (BECA Plan) which was adopted by the Glenelg Shire Council in November 2007. Changes to the plan were adopted by Council in August 2010.

The key benefits of the project include:
• Increased tourism expenditure through better facilities for visitors and recreational boat users
• Better facilities to support new tourism opportunities, such as cruise ships, eco-tourism businesses (charter operations for whales, seals, dolphins, and coastal scenery tours) and new recreational fishing charter businesses
• Improved arrangements for some of the commercial fishing fleet
• Improved boat launching facilities for recreational boaters
• Improved management and traffic flow on foreshore.

EDU Foreshore
The first stage of the project has three components:
• Development of a 70 berth floating marina.
• Reclamation of some land to provide on-shore support infrastructure.
• Relocation and expansion of the recreational boat launching ramp.

The land reclamation works commenced in late 2011. Dredged material from the Port of Portland’s shipping berth and sand from the mouth of the harbour was used to reclaim land around the Maritime Discovery Centre. These works were completed in July 2012 and over time the material has been compacted and settled.

The construction of the 70 berth floating marina commenced in July 2012 with driving of the piles, and the floating pontoons were progressively installed. The installation is now complete with the marina set to open and be filled with boats in April 2013. Land based works around the marina continue.

A four lane boat ramp and onshore support facilities have been designed for the area adjacent to the Lee Breakwater. This will include boat and trailer parking, state of the art fish cleaning tables and a grassed community open space to be used for overflow parking in peak times. Construction of the boat ramp is planned for June 2013.

This stage of the Portland Harbour Project is an exciting addition to the Portland foreshore and a great opportunity for local and visiting recreational boaters.
