| 19 July 2012 | | Works will soon be underway on two important upgrade projects for the Heywood and district community.
Glenelg Shire Council has allocated funds in the 2012/13 Capital Works Budget for the Heywood Apex Park playground redevelopment and the Scott Street amenity block upgrade.
The existing amenity block will be removed and a new accessible amenity block will be placed adjacent to the car park area at the front of the existing playground.
The ordering of new playground equipment has commenced and landscape works will soon begin, pending the suitability of site conditions.
Works on the Scott Street amenity block are expected to commence in mid August and will continue until mid November 2012.
Demolition of the existing Heywood Apex Park playground amenity block is expected to commence in mid September and completion of the new facility is scheduled by late October 2012.
The anticipated completion dates will allow for both community facilities to be available to the public in time for the busy Christmas holiday period.
Council’s Acting Mayor Cr Bruce Cross welcomed the announcement that works on the two projects are to commence shortly.
“The Heywood Apex Park playground redevelopment and the Scott Street amenity block upgrade are two important projects that will improve the accessibility of this infrastructure for community members”, he said.
“There has been some delay in the initial stages of the projects and it is pleasing that Council is now able to move forward with these essential upgrades”.
Council expects that there will be minimal inconvenience to residents and visitors to Heywood during the construction period.
Options for the location of a bank of temporary accessible portable toilets are currently being explored.
A number of signs will be placed at entrances to the town and other central locations to direct people to the temporary facilities.
A community notice board containing a copy of design plans, planned work schedules and other useful information about the Heywood Apex Park playground redevelopment will be located at the site and updated throughout the construction process.
