BACKGROUND

The inaugural year of the Tuna Fishing Competition in 2016 attracted 190 anglers from across the state who competed for more than $12,000 in prizes. Local fisherman, Brodie Carter was the overall winner of $5,000 with a fish caught weighing 20.5kg in the 2nd weekend of the competition. Second was Grant Kellow from Cottles Ridge with a 19.2kg fish and third Richard Knight from Bulleen at 17.1kg.

Numerous fish are being caught throughout the year of 100kg+ making Portland the Southern Bluefin Tuna capital.

Portland’s Southern Bluefin tuna industry is worth about $10 million to the Glenelg Shire economy.

Portland is home to a world class recreational fishing industry, attracting thousands of anglers from across Australia. The season is traditionally from February to June each year, but in recent years anglers have recorded big catches year round.
