Hooked on Tuna Fishing Competition

The 2019 Hooked on Tuna competition was held over 3 weekends in April:

6 & 7 April
13 & 14 April
20 & 21 April

First week luck has paid off for a keen angler who has taken home the top prize of the competition.

Melbourne based fisherman Martin Rombolas was announced as the overall competition winner on Saturday afternoon, successfully holding first place on the leader board for three weeks with his 104kg gutted and gilled tuna

Second place was awarded to Melbourne angler Chris Melideo, who reeled in a 98.6kg tuna during week two of the competition. Third place went to James Cauchi, also from Melbourne, who caught a 75kg tuna during the second week.

Numerous fish are being caught throughout the year of 100kg+ making Portland the Southern Bluefin Tuna capital.

Portland’s Southern Bluefin tuna industry is worth about $10 million to the Glenelg Shire economy.

Portland is home to a world class recreational fishing industry, attracting thousands of anglers from across Australia. The season is traditionally from February to June each year, but in recent years anglers have recorded big catches year round.
