MEDIA RELEASE - Glenelg Shire Seniors Day Out

27 September 2017

Senior community members in the Glenelg Shire are invited to enjoy a ‘Great Day Out’ next month which will be headlined by one of Australia’s most loved performers.

The Seekers’ Athol Guy and his band will perform The Seekers Story at the Seniors Great Day Out at the Portland Civic Hall on Thursday 19 October from 10am to 3pm, as a part of the Victorian Seniors Festival.

The Seekers Story is a musical and visual performance, written and narrated by Athol Guy, bassist and founding member of The Seekers about his personal experience from the 1960s, through to modern day, where the band recently celebrated their 50th anniversary.

Popular local act Madazz Jazz will share the stage for the day session while YMCA Upright and Active will host a demonstration fitness class to suit all ages and abilities.

Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Anita Rank said the Seniors Great Day Out event was provided with funding support from the State Government to acknowledge and celebrate the contribution that seniors make to the community.

She said to have one of Australia’s biggest performer’s headline the event was a great windfall for the shire.

“The Seekers are one of the most iconic bands from the 60s era, to have Athol Guy perform and speak of his personal experience at the Great Day Out is a one in a life time opportunity,” Cr Rank said.

“Council has been hosting this event for about 13 years, and each year there has been a fantastic response with large attendances.”

The Seniors Great Day Out provides the opportunity to celebrate the lives of all seniors and allows guests the chance to make, or renew friendships.

Free bus transportation for guests will be available to and from the event with stops at Casterton, Dartmoor, Digby, Heywood, Merino, Nelson and Sandford. The day will include free morning/afternoon tea plus lunch.

Tickets are available for the ‘Great Day Out’ at $10 per person. To secure your place for this event please call the Aged and Disability Services team on (03) 5522 2204 or email
