MEDIA RELEASE - 2018 Australia Day nominations now open

9 October 2017

Do you know somebody or a group who makes a difference in our community and deserves to be recognised?

If so, nominate them now for the Glenelg Shire 2018 Australia Day Awards.

Nominations are open in various award categories, including Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year and Community Group of the Year.

2017 Young Citizen of the Year Grace Davey said she felt very humbled and grateful that people from different organisations she was involved in took their own time and energy to nominate her.

“It is these people and mentors that should really be awarded and recognised,” Miss Davey said.

“I feel it is very important at an early age to get involved within your community. In doing so it helps to install a sense of belonging as well as giving you good networking and social skills whilst also improving your self-esteem and decision making.”

Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the Australia Day Awards were a great way to recognise members and groups in the community who make the shire a better place.

“We are lucky to have so many different community groups and volunteers in our shire who are determined to improve the liveability and amenity of our towns,” Cr Rank said.

“The awards are a great initiative to recognise those unsung heroes who make our shire such a great place work, live and play.”

Nomination forms are available at or or at Customer Service Centres. Nominations close at 4pm on Friday 27 October 2017.

The awards will be presented at the Australia Day celebrations across Glenelg Shire on Friday 26 January 2018.
